The Mountain That Wept: The Story of Le Morne

The Mountain That Wept: The Story of Le Morne

Le Morne is a striking peninsula located at the extreme southwestern tip of Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean. Towering more than 500 meters above sea level, it stands as one of the island's most breathtaking natural landmarks. The mountain, Le Morne Brabant, is named after the Dutch East India Company ship Brabant, which was wrecked there in 1783. In French, "Le Morne" translates to “The Mournful One,” a name that foreshadows its deeply moving history.

History

Beyond its postcard-perfect scenery, Le Morne carries a heavy historical legacy. In the 19th century, during French colonization, enslaved people f leeing brutal treatment sought refuge in the mountain’s dense and rugged terrain. When slavery was abolished under British rule, some of those in hiding were unaware of the change. Fearing re-capture, many tragically chose to leap from the summit to their deaths rather than return to a life of bondage. This heartbreaking event transformed Le Morne into a powerful symbol of freedom and resistance.

According to oral histories passed down through generations, it is said that the enslaved jumped toward the west—toward the African continent—in the hope that their spirits would return home.

Today, the local community of Le Morne village plays a vital role in preserving this sacred site. On July 10, 2008, Le Morne Brabant was officially inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. That same year, the monument La Route des Esclaves (The Slave Route) was inaugurated at the base of the mountain, commemorating its historical and cultural importance.

Le Morne Village

The nearby village of Le Morne has maintained its authenticity, with around 2,000 residents. Most locals work as fishermen, construction workers, or both. The younger generation is increasingly engaged in water sports, reflecting the village’s deep connection with the sea. Despite the presence of five luxury hotels in the area, economic opportunities for the villagers remain limited.

The Le Morne Heritage Trust Fund has meticulously documented the village’s evolution since its earliest days

Leisure Activities

Le Morne beach is among the most famous and visited on the island. It offers a range of water-based activities such as kitesurfing, swimming with dolphins, and snorkeling. Its turquoise waters and vibrant marine life make it a hub for both tourists and locals seeking adventure or relaxation.

Hiking

The hike to the summit of Le Morne Brabant is now open to the public. The journey typically takes around 3.5 to 4 hours, depending on individual pace. While certain sections are steep and may require assistance, the panoramic view from the top is absolutely rewarding, offering a unique blend of sea, mountain, and sky.

Underwater Waterfall

Off the coast of Le Morne beach lies a captivating optical illusion: the famous underwater waterfall. This visual phenomenon, caused by sand and silt moving over the edge of an ocean shelf, gives the illusion of water cascading deep into the ocean. It’s best viewed from the air via seaplane and remains one of Mauritius' most photographed natural wonders.

One Eye

For passionate wave riders, Le Morne is home to One Eye, a legendary wave known for its speed, power, and precision. Located on the outer reef pass just north of the main beach, One Eye is considered one of the best left-hand point breaks in the world. Due to its intensity and potential hazards, it is reserved for experienced surfers, kitesurfers, and windsurfers.
